B-17 Flying Fortress Specifications.

The USAAF WW2 B-17 Flying Fortress was made by the Boeing Aircraft Company.  The B17 was 74' 4" long, 19' 1" high and had a wingspan of 103' 10"  The B17's empty weight was 36,135 lbs. and it had a Gross Weight of 65,500 lbs.  The B-17 used four Wright R-1820-97 Cyclone engines each producing 1200 hp giving it a total of 4,800 hp.  The B-17 has a Cruise Speed of 182 mph, a Maximum Speed of 287 mph, a service ceiling of 35,600 ft. and a maximum range of 3400 miles.  This plane was also called the flying fort short for fortress.  This page has some great aviation art prints and photos of the B17.

Most B-17 Flying Fortress paintings show them in combat over Hitler's Europe, but  Flying Fortresses played a role in the Pacific, too. Here we see two B-17Es of the 13th Air Force, 98th Squadron - "Galloping Gus" and "Typhoon McGoon II" - hooking it  home after a bombing mission against Japanese positions in New Guinea. Flying into a War

On December 6, 1941, Pilot Earl Cooper, navigator John "Davy" Crockett and their crewmates flew their B-17C Flying Fortress to the Philippines by way of Oahu, Hawaii. But arriving in Hawaii on the morning of December 7, the unarmed B-17 met Japanese Zeros. Nine-O-Nine

Print depicts Nine-O-Nine being readied for another mission to Berlin  from its base in England, 1945. This B-17 flew 140 successful combat missions with the 91st Bomb Group without ever losing a crewman or aborting a mission, while participating in eighteen raids on Berlin and flying an amazing 1,129 combat hours. Poltava

After protracted negotiations with the Russians, permission was granted for the USAAF to use Soviet airfields on shuttle missions. On the third such  mission, the 8th Air Force dispatched 145 B-17s from the 3rd Air Division. Here, we see the 45th Combat Wing, with the 96th, 388th and 452nd Bombardment Groups arriving at Poltava. Neil Bech's baby daughter, B-17G Bonnie B of the 303rd Bomb Group flew 93 missions from January to September 1944, when she  lost a propeller and landed safely on only two engines. Sting of the Yellowjackets

A single Flying Fortress finds itself all alone in enemy skies, damaged  by flak during its bomb run. One engine has been shut down, control surfaces are  shredded and there are wounded airmen aboard. Struggling to maintain altitude, the B-17 is attacked by two Me 109s bent upon its destruction. Fighters from the 361st Fighter Group/375th Fighter Squadron enter the fray, destroying one of the attackers and driving off his wingman. The journey home will be uneventful, now that  the injured crew has its own private escort of the determined Little Friends.
